Perfecting Your Virtual Interview Technique

1. Perform a Systems Check

With every virtual interview, there are essential components that go into making the experience possible. Your computer, the software, an internet connection, a microphone, and a webcam. It’s good practice to do a test run with all of your technology before the actual interview in order to ensure that everything is working properly.

2. Also A Fashion Check

Looking professional and prepared is not difficult, and dressing for a virtual interview is the same as dressing for an in-person interview. Stick with simple colors and patterns that allow your outfit to frame who you are and don’t distract you or your interviewer.

3. Create a Focused Environment

Be sure to reduce the chances of any potential distractions. Silence your phone, turn off the TV or music player, keep the door closed, and let everyone else in the house/apartment know that you need some privacy. This creates a space where you can keep focused on the interviewer and their questions.

4. Prepare for Common Questions

An interview doesn’t need to be a scary, open-ended experience. The truth is, most interviewers ask the same questions. This is great because it means you can prepare in advance. Check out this Forbes list of the 50 most common interview questions, and practice how you might answer them before the actual interview.

5. Most Importantly: Follow Up

Following up is a great chance to say or ask anything you forgot to bring up during the original interview, and it brings a great human touch to the whole process. Chances are, the interviewer is speaking with many candidates, and following up can help you stand out amongst the crowd.
